Troops Rescue 18 Abducted Persons, Kill 48 Terrorists In Northwest Nigeria

Troops of the Nigerian Army in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria recorded some successes in their war against terrorism after killing 48 terrorists in the state in a series of operations.

Nigerian Army troops killed 48 terrorists and rescued 18 terror victims in a series of operations carried out between Tuesday, March 23, and Saturday, April 3, in Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria, a statement by the army said.

Mohammed Yerima, the Director of Nigerian Army Public Relations said in a statement on Monday, May 10, troops of 8 Division, Nigerian Army operating in Zamfara and adjoining states made progress in the fight against banditry and other violent crimes in the Northwest.

The Division had earlier launched Operation Tsare Mutane following the directives of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru for the Division to stabilise the area to facilitate the return of socio-economic activities, Yerima, a Brig. Gen. said.

He explained that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division, Usman Yusuf, a Maj-Gen launched the first phase of Operation Tsare Mutane which lasted between March 23 and April 2, in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

According to the Army spokesperson, the troops cleared many terrorist camps in Jaya, Kadaya, and Bayan Ruwa among several others, adding that they killed 48 terrorists, while their leader, known as Jummo sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.

Yarima stated that 18 kidnap victims were rescued during the operations while eight AK-47 rifles, one G3 rifle, one PKT, and a Machine Gun, were recovered.

As part of the second phase of Operation Tsare Mutane, he stated that the troops also sacked several other terrorist camps around Gabiya, Bozaya, Mereri, and the adjoining forests in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State from April 19 to May 3.

During the operations, he said terrorists’ leaders including Yellow Mai-Bille, Sani Meli, Dan-Katsina, and Sama’ila Bakajin Bari were killed while the main leader Nasanda narrowly escaped with fatal injuries.

Yarima said one Isan Heshi who is a close ally of a notorious terrorist called Nagala was also killed. Items recovered in the second phase of Operation Tsare Mutane include 4,600 rounds of ammunition, two AK-103 rifles, eight AK-47 magazines, 1,628 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, 54 rounds of PKM, one motorcycle, and five Techno mobile phones.
