The Nigeria Army has arrested a fake soldier for allegedly assaulting veteran musician, Friday Igwe, aka Baba Fryo.

Igwe, in a Facebook post, on Sunday, had shared pictures of himself with bruises and bandages.

Alongside the pictures, the ‘Dem Go Dey Pose’ singer said, “I was humiliated by unknown (unnamed) soldiers. I tried to force them to the barracks; a female soldier interfered and allowed them to escape.

“The case is under investigation. Thanks to Ojo Army Barracks, which took the case on their shoulders. I pray they will surely be caught and brought to book.”

Igwe, in another post on Tuesday, said one of the alleged fake soldiers had been caught.

Sharing pictures of the man in mufti, besides a camouflage hat, and handcuffs, the musician posted, “This is one of the unknown fake soldiers that deliberately beat up our living legend, Babafryo Igweh, yesterday without a reason.

“People need to be very careful these days as there are so many Babylonians posing as soldiers. I am very proud of the Nigerian Army and OC, MP, Ojo Cantonment, Capt. A.S Atunwa, for his effective investigations and taking action in this matter.

300-Level Medical Student Commits Suicide Over Possible Expulsion From School

Uzakah Timi Ebiweni, a 300 level medical student of the Niger Delta University (NDU), has allegedly committed suicide in Bayelsa state.

According to reports, Ebiweni took a plunge into a river close to the university campus, Amassoma located in the Southern Ijaw area council of the state after failing his examination.

About 50 students, out of the 169 who sat for the  Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) exam, failed the examination.

SaharaReporters contacted the police public relations officer in the state, SP. Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident but said there was no official report yet.

Ndoni Ingezi, public relations officer of the university who spoke to SaharaReporters said: “Eniweni took his own life after news that he was part of 22 students shortlisted to be withdrawn from the college came out.

“You know it is a general practice that every student pass the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) exams before progressing to the next level of academic pursuit.

“But Ebiweni and 21 others failed beyond the level that they could be placed on academic probation for another academic year so they had to be withdrawn.

“So in their usual practice, they do not break the news to the student until they are invited for counselling.

“When Ebiweni was counseled and informed about the fact that he will be withdrawn from college, on that day, he accepted the decision of the college in good fate and left.

“Only to for the University to hear afterwards that the young man took his own life.

“His body has however been recovered and deposited at the Sabageria mortuary.”

Breaking News: Health Minister Replies Senate, Says National Healthcare Foundation Is Bad

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, has blamed the foundation of healthcare in the country for the deteriorating conditions of hospital facilities across the country.

The Senate had summoned Adewole to appear before it on Tuesday over what the Senate President Bukola Saraki called the poor state of infrastructure that has contributed to deaths of Nigerians in need of health care.

Speaking before the  Senate on Tuesday, Adewole said, “Over the last couple of years, we have had a challenge.

“We can describe the health care as a pyramid, with Primary Health Care at the base, Secondary at middle and Tertiary at the top.

“Only 10% of Nigerians who require care would need to go to tertiary institutions.

“For them to function effectively, they depend on functional primary and secondary health care centres. If these two levels of care are functional, about 90% of ailments will be taken care of.

“For us in Nigeria, they represent the topmost and by design are expected to manage complex and complicated cases.

“We have 22 teaching hospitals in the country and 17 specialist hospitals under the direct body of the Federal Government.

“The teaching hospitals constitute the apex of health care in any country.

“We can compare it to a building — primary health as the foundation, the secondary as the wall and the tertiary as the roof.

“The problem we have is that the foundation is bad and the wall is weak and we are only concerned about the roof.

“If we invest in the Primary Health Care, a lot of people would not have a cause to go to the Tertiary.

“Your Excellency, I must commend you for approving the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. It is a game changer.

“We spent two years developing, and over the last two weeks, we’ve started to roll out.

“Twenty-two of our states have registered for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund.

“Our aim is to structure it in a way that money would flow from the Central Bank to the agencies.

“As of today, 14 states are yet to show interest in basic health care provision.

“We have two signatories to the account — the head of the community where it is located and the head of the facilities.

“Our aim is to offer free antenatal, free deliveries, screening for tuberculosis.

“I commend the Senate for the approval of the 1% primary healthcare inclusive in the Budget.

“Teaching hospitals cannot survive alone and in isolation. The State needs to partner with us so that secondary hospitals would be working.

“We believe that the issue of power supply should be looked into.”

‘Boko Haram Spread Under Your Watch’, Presidency Slams Obasanjo Again

The Federal Government has passed the blame of rising insurgency and widespread killings in the country to former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo had blasted the Federal Government for failing to acknowledge the magnitude of the situation at hand and allowing insurgency spread.

He said: “They have both incubated and developed beyond what Nigeria can handle alone. They are now combined and internationalized with ISIS in control.

“It is no longer an issue of lack of education and lack of employment for our youths in Nigeria which it began as, it is now West African fulanization, African Islamization and global organized crimes of human trafficking, money laundering, drug trafficking, gun trafficking, illegal mining and regime change.

“Yet, we could have dealt with both earlier, and nip them in the bud, but Boko Haram boys were seen as rascals not requiring serious attention in administering holistic measures of stick and carrot.

Reacting to the comments on Tuesday, Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture faulted the former president for his role in allowing Boko Haram spread.

He said described former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comments imputing ethno-religious motive to Boko Haram and ISWAP as deeply offensive and patently divisive, saying such indiscreet comments are far below the status of an elder statesman.

“Since the Boko Haram crisis, which had been simmering under the watch of Obasanjo, boiled over in 2009, the terrorist organization has killed more Muslims than adherents of any other religion, blown up more mosques than any other houses of worship and is not known to have spared any victim on the basis of their ethnicity.

“It is therefore absurd to say that Boko Haram and its ISWAP variant have as their goal the ‘Fulanisation and Islamisation’ of Nigeria, West Africa or Africa.

“Boko Haram is a mindless, godless group who are as far away from Islam as one can think of.

“That explains the massive degrading of Boko Haram, which has since lost its capacity to carry out the kind of spectacular attacks for which it became infamous, and the recovery of every inch of captured Nigerian territory from the terrorists.”

Nigeria’s Health Minister, Appears Before Senate

Professor Isaac Adewole, Nigeria’s Minister of Health has appeared before the Nigeria Senate to explain the poor state of teaching hospitals in the country.

Adewole was summoned by the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly following a motion by Senator David Umaru (APC-Niger) at plenary on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, to brief it on the current state of facilities and health care services in the teaching hospitals.

Umar noted that most teaching hospitals in the country are not up to standard and have been overstretched with patients having to sleep on bare floors due to lack of space and proper medical equipment needed for their treatment.

Receiving Adewole at the Senate Chamber, Bukola Saraki, Senate President, noted that the Senate is concerned with the deteriorating conditions of hospitals and health facilities across the country and inability to improve the standard of the health sector despite the annual budget being made available to the ministry.

“We would give you the opportunity to take the floor to brief the Senate on the state of affairs of the Nigerian Teaching Hospitals. We are concerned with the deteriorating conditions of our hospital facilities across the country.

“Despite the annual budgetary allocation to the health sector, Nigerians are still dying because of obsolete equipment, the poor state of infrastructure, lack of generating sets, lack of power, sometimes lack of diesel, lack of drugs etc which we are very concerned about,” Saraki said.

Saraki tasked Adewole to avail the Senate what solutions and measures he would employ to tackle the problem affecting the entire country.

Nigerian Doctor wins “Brain Tumor Research” award in U.S.

Dr Chibawanye Ene, a US-based Nigerian Doctor, has won the 2019 Ronald L. Bittner Award on Brain Tumor Research. A statement from the Clinical Department, Applied Radiation Oncology U.S., said Ene received the award at the 2019 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting held from April 13 to April 17 in San Diego.

The-37-year-old, who is from Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, won the award with his research work on ‘Anti-PD-L1 Immunotherapy Enhances Radiation-induced Abscopal Response in Glioblastoma’. Journalists gathered that Immunotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that helps the immune system fight cancer. The immune system made up of white blood cells, organs and tissues of the lymph system help the body fight infections and other diseases. The Clinical Department stated Immunotherapy is a type of biological therapy. Also, Glioblastoma, known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), is the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Initially, signs and symptoms of glioblastoma are non-specific. They may include headaches, personality changes, nausea, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke. Immunotherapy for glioblastoma has been largely unsuccessful in part because molecular heterogeneity drives selective elimination of only a subset of tumour cells.

According to the statement, it appears that therapeutic success in patients would require achieving an abscopal effect, where following focused radiation therapy, non-targeted tumour cells are attacked by the immune system. The statement further revealed that it remains unclear how glioblastoma responds to focused radiation in terms of failure location and whether immunotherapy could amplify the immune response to tumour outside the radiation field. The result of the study’s experiment shows that radiation combined with anti PD L1 therapy induces an immunological response to unirradiated glioblastoma. The researchers are currently optimizing other treatment combinations that could also be readily assessed in phase I human clinical trials.
