The Rotary International injects $100m in global polio fight
Rotary is providing $100 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio especially in African countries such as Nigeria.
The vaccine-preventable disease once paralyzed hundreds of thousands of children each year.
In a statement to APA on Monday Rotary said its funding comes as the organization and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) address the final—and most pressing—challenges to ending poliovirus transmission.
It is at a time when Nigeria approaches three years without any reported cases of wild poliovirus, bringing the Africa region closer to polio-free status, Rotary said.
“Routine immunization in high-risk states is helping us prevent new cases of wild polio,” said Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair or Rotary’s Nigeria PolioPlus Committee.
While there were only 33 cases of wild poliovirus reported in 2018, the last mile of eradication has proven to be the most difficult. Barriers to eradication–like weak health systems, insecurity, and mobile and remote populations–must be overcome, Rotary said.
To support polio eradication efforts in endemic countries, Rotary is allocating half the funds to Afghanistan ($16.3 million), Nigeria ($10.2 million), and Pakistan ($25.2million).
The others are Chad ($102,395) Democratic Republic of the Congo ($9.5 million) Ethiopia ($2.6 million) Iraq ($6 million) Kenya ($6.3 million) Mali ($1.2 million) Somalia ($1.4 million) South Sudan ($1.2 million) Syria ($1.7 million) and Yemen ($2.1 million)
Rotary said it is providing additional funding to support efforts aimed at keeping vulnerable countries polio-free.
A civil society organization known as Coalition for Nigeria Movement, CNM, has accused ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan of milking the nation’s treasury dry during their tenures.
It claimed that the duo, when they held sway as President, turned government funds into ATMs where they, their associates and cronies withdrew money to finance their lifestyles.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, CNM’s National Convener, Mr. Sabo Odeh lamented that under the governments of Obasanjo and Jonathan, Nigerians were almost misled to believe that democracy is synonymous with corruption.
He, therefore, recommended that the Federal Government should conduct a comprehensive audit of government funds by probing national finances from 1999 – 2015 so as to bring the ex-leaders to book.
The group also opined that Nigerians should declare former presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as persona non-grata and not accord either of them any respect either in public places as former presidents or elder statesmen.
Text of Sabo’s speech reads: “Considering our history of truncated democracy and aborted republics, our successfully keeping at democracy for upwards of two decades is a feat that is worth celebrating, which the country has rightly celebrated.
“It is however alarming that there is a pocket of evil people that are saddened by the very fact that Nigeria’s democracy have survived their repeated assault on it, which has made their intentions to abort two decades of continued democracy to fail serially.
“So toxic is their bad wish for the country that they are unable to hide their disappointment and anger that the country is on the path of thriving in spite of their willful acts of sabotage against the nation.
“These axes of evil have in recent times spoken through two former presidents, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. It is interesting that these are men that Nigerians have the misfortune of enduring as leaders for fourteen out of the twenty years of democratic rule.
“These are men under whose administration Nigerians were almost misled to believe that democracy is synonymous with corruption; they presided over fourteen years of the country being parceled out to friends and family – government funds became ATM where they, their associates and cronies withdraw money to finance their debased lifestyles.
“There is a long list of national assets that were fraudulently privatized against the interest of the country. Proof that these entities were sold under questionable terms is in the very fact the sectors are being held hostage while the supposed buyers are unable to meet basic benchmarks.
“One would have expected that the disgrace of being found to have looted the collective treasury would have forced these men to seek out the path of honour but it appears they are too far gone to the dark side for them to be remorseful.
“Instead of finding ways to atone for their sins in the hope that they will one day be considered in the light of legends like MKO Abiola and President Buhari, they have rather resorted to piling more sins on their existing transgressions. Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan have decided to continue assaulting the country on several fronts and in various guises.
“We are of the opinion that their resort to attacking the integrity of Nigeria while making it appear as if their target is President Buhari is a strategy to draw attention away from the years of bad governance that they inflicted on Nigerians.
“It is a concept of making the current state of affairs appears dismal so that the horrible foundation they had laid for our democracy can be forgiven.
“While they are free to attempt exonerating themselves from their misdeeds, what they are not allowed to do is to go about it in a way that further does damage to our body politics.
“The utterances of Obasanjo and Jonathan in recent weeks are capable of sparking off ethno-religious crisis in the country because they continue to speak in ways that pitch one section of the country against the other.
“They incite Christians against Muslims, they pitch other ethnic nationalities against the Fulani even as they encourage some parts of the country to wallow in victimhood, a situation that has fueled separatist agitations of different shades.
“They even went beyond merely making inflammatory and inciting utterances to actually courting foreign support to destabilize Nigeria.
“Taken with their recent ugly remarks and posture in the public domain, these subversive actions all point to the fact that Obasanjo and Jonathan not have the interest of the country at heart as erroneously believed in certain quarters.
“Let us point out that these evil utterances are not in any way intended to be fair criticism of the government of the day. They are rather intended to make the country fail.
“It must be noted that in the era of both men as presidents, they would not tolerate such from anyone as those who criticized them are summarily dealt with.
“We must further state that Nigeria is not the property of a few people. The country belongs to us all. A consequence of this is that we must rise up to ward off the attacks by these men and their agents on the long term stability of Nigeria.
“They have cornered enough resources to buy citizenship in other countries for themselves and their family members; in order to retain what they have looted they have no qualms about plunging the country into crisis.
“Nigerians owe it a duty to protect themselves from these kind of desperate men and any measure necessary to curtail their excesses and stop their evil plans against the country.
“Desperate times they say call for desperate measures. Our belief is that the unethical behavior of these two men should be visited with unorthodox responses as a deterrence.
“To this end, the Coalition for Nigeria Movement hereby presents a 7-point demand to the Federal Government, which must be met to prove that the present administration is no colluding with Obasanjo and Jonathan to ink the country. Our demands are:
“That the Federal Government conduct a comprehensive audit of government funds by probing national finances from 1999 – 2015.
“This probe should be with a view to unravel the mysteries surrounding the loss of Nigeria’s resources, which has become imperative to unveil the true identities of those who stole Nigeria blind but are today parading as elder statesmen.
“That anyone indicted by the aforementioned investigation should be made to stand trial and handed the stiffest punishment applicable where they are convicted.
“This is to serve as deterrent to those that think they can loot the treasury and then assume the roles of critics in order to evade justice.
“That the federal government, as another phase of the anti-corruption war, prioritize the recovery of assets that were illegally privatized or sold to family members and associates of Obasanjo and Jonathan.
“In addition to recovering the said assets, government should open corruption probe and trials of those that took part in this heinous crime against Nigeria.
“That the nation’s anti-graft agencies should get a marching order to trace foreign assets that were illegally acquired using looted funds using international collaboration platform that exist for this purpose.
“Countries where assets are domiciled should be encourage to cooperate with Nigeria while the necessary procedure for asset recovery and forfeiture for proceeds of crime should be lodged with those nations to recover that has been stolen from Nigeria.
“That henceforth Nigerians should declare former presidents, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan as persona non-grata and not accord either of them any respect either in public places as former presidents or elder statesmen.
“This stance shall persist is until such a time that all the sponsors of terrorism either directly or indirectly are unraveled in the country.
“That the Federal Government should henceforth not extend any invitation to state functions to any of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan for using their positions in the past to enrich themselves and families to the detriment of the common masses of our beloved country.
“That the federal government notifies friends and partners of Nigerians to stop further transactions and interactions with both men or risk being enemies of Nigeria.
*Countries that continue to hobnob with either men would have proven that they are the international components that are fanning the embers of the security breaches in Nigeria.
“That no Nigerian will be harassed, arrested, prosecuted or criminalized for publicly humiliating, insulting or taunting these men for what they have done to Nigeria.
“This should be a new approach to treating treasury looters and those that have proven that they are enemies of the country.
“The Coalition for Nigeria Movement will not stop at just making these demands but will begin a nationwide mobilization and contact activities to get more Nigerians on board in the quest to properly criminalize the theft of public assets and running subversive activities against the country irrespective of who is involved.
“We shall also be mobilizing Nigerians to join us on piling pressure on the government of the day not to shy from its responsibility of defending Nigeria’s democracy against subversive past leaders.
“We want Nigerians to remember that it a sacred duty for all of us to ensure that our democracy survives into perpetuity. This is a task that requires that all sentiments are discarded while national interest takes primacy.”
Songbird Berita Khumalo has mourned South African house musician Nichume Siwundla who reportedly committed suicide last Thursday saying death has robbed the industry of a budding star.
According to SA media, Nichume, who was behind the 2017 hit Bhutiza, produced by Mobi Dixon, last Thursday jumped off a building in Johannesburg in an apparent case of suicide. She had apparently complained about having serious problems.
As South Africans came to terms with the death of Nichume, Berita took time to pour her heart out on social media mourning the late musician.
“My heart breaks. We were supposed to meet for lunch and chat, but due to scheduling, we never got up to it. Sometimes, we are so busy chasing the next and the next… that we don’t take the time to check upon each other,” posted Berita.
The musician, who was in Bulawayo last week, described Nichume, who had just released a single titled, Thobela with Mobi Dixon, as a very talented vocalist.
“She was a budding star. I remember the first time I listened and watched her perform live, her voice was as clear and crisp as on the record Bhutiza.”
She said she wished she had gotten time to know Nichume better.
“I wish we had connected and maybe we could’ve figured out how best to do this thing called life. At this point, no amount of regret can erase this event.
“My deepest condolences to the Siwundla family and to brother Mobi Dixon.”
This is the latest case of suicide by a Mzansi music star after the death of SA hip hop pioneer HHP last year.
The Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission has described the claim by the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, that he was not the accounting officer of the Kano Emirate Council as a misrepresentation of facts.
This is contained in a preliminary report of the Commission on the investigation being carried out in respect of the alleged misappropriation of over N3.4 billion by the Kano Emirate Council.
The report was signed by the commission’s Chairman, Mr Muhuyi Magaji, a copy of which was made available to Reporter in Kano on Thursday.
Emir Sanusi had in a reply to a query by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over the alleged N3.4 billion misappropriation, claimed that he met only N1.8 billion in the Emirate Council accounts at the time of his appointment as emir.
The Nation recalls that the monarch also maintained that he was not the accounting officer of the emirate at the time but the institutions secretary before his ascension of the throne.
But in the latest report with reference number PCAC/GEN/6/VOL.I dated June 11, 2019 and addressed to the Secretary to the State Government, the anti-corruption body implied that the emir was not being truthful in his defense.
Part of the report reads: “In furtherance to the Commission’s earlier communication No. PCAC/GEN/6/V.I dated 31st May, 2019 on the above subject matter and the unfolding events, the Commission deemed it necessary to make some clarifications as follows:-
“It is imperative to state categorically that, the Commission’s investigation is on alleged misappropriation and questionable expenditures but not on the funds left behind by the Late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and we still maintain our stance.
“In the cause of investigation we undertook an analysis of the main Account belonging to Kano Emirate Council and domicile at First Bank with account No. 2005888452 starting from the era of the Late Emir to enable the Commission have an idea of how the money is being managed.”
According to the report, there were 783 activities bordering on withdrawals, transfers and placements from Jan. 2, 2013 to June 6, 2014 during the time of the late Emir.
“As from 2nd January 2013 to 13th April, 2017 the opening balance is N432,338,412.98. Total credit made in the account during this period was N6,784,146,335.73 while the total debit during the period under review is N7,209,035,163.09.” It said.
However, it added that, “The closing balance as at April, 2017 is N7,449,585.62.”
It further indicated that “on Feb.13, 2014 and Feb. 26, 2014 payments were made to Philko Ltd, the company said to have undertook the construction of Ado Bayero Royal City via Inter Bank transfers of the sum of N776,159,519.50.
“There were transfers of N388,079,759.75, N338,079,759.75 and N50,000,000.00 made on Feb. 13, 2014 and Feb. 26, 2014 respectively; making the total quoted figures for Philko Ltd.”
The report also alleged that during the period, fixed deposit placements were made to the tune of N581,884,729.54 (placement and rollovers) while net withdrawals on some engagements both cash and withdrawal stood at N1,056,533,728.31.
“In summary, the total withdrawal made from the Account under the Late Emir was N2,414,577,977.35, subtracting this amount from total debit on the account which is N7,209,035,163.09.
“It is evidently clear that the current Emir is responsible for the expenditures to the total sum of N4,794,457,185.74 from the Emirate Council Account domicile in First Bank Plc,” it said.
Similarly, it alleged that all the expenditures made by the Emirate Council were either based on the approval or instructions of Emir Sanusi.
It attached copy of a payment voucher in respect of one of the withdrawals to buttress its claim, which reads, “Being payment to the above named in respect of making special prayers for peace as directed by H.H. Emir of Kano respectively”.
“Therefore, any claim that the Emir is not the accounting officer of the Kano Emirate Council is a deception and a misrepresentation of facts.
“Specifically, the reason of our recommendation for the suspension apart from obstruction of investigation which formed the basis, investigation further reveals that Rufa’i Buhari (Senior Accountant) usually made cash
withdrawals directly from the account and change it to Dollars on behalf of the Emir.
“Sometimes direct transfers from the account are made to a Bureau De Change belonging to one Jazuli Sani who was said to have died.
“The Commission still maintain the allegation on unappropriated, seemingly personal expenditures, making the total sum of questionable expenditures uncovered by this investigation to the tune of N3,432,090,797.94 only”, the report added.
Taking dietary supplements for weight loss, muscle building, and energy is associated with nearly three times increased risk for severe medical events in children and young adults, compared to vitamins, a study warns.
“The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued countless warnings about supplements sold for weight loss, muscle building or sport performance, sexual function, and energy, and we know these products are widely marketed to and used by young people,” said Flora Or from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in the US.
The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, looked at adverse event reports between January 2004 and April 2015 in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System on the food and dietary supplements database.
The researchers analysed the relative risk for severe medical events such as death, disability, and hospitalization in individuals aged 0 and 25 years that were linked with the use of dietary supplements sold for weight loss, muscle building, or energy compared to vitamins.
They found that there were 977 single-supplement-related adverse event reports for the target age group. Of those, about 40 per cent involved severe medical outcomes, including death and hospitalization.
Supplements sold for weight loss, muscle building, and energy were associated with almost three times the risk for severe medical outcomes compared to vitamins. Supplements sold for sexual function and colon cleanse were associated with about two times the risk for severe medical outcomes compared to vitamins.
S Bryn Austin, professor at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, noted that reputable physicians do not recommend the use of the type of dietary supplements analysed in this study. Many of these products have been found to be adulterated with prescription pharmaceuticals, banned substances, heavy metals, pesticides, and other dangerous chemicals.
Other studies have linked weight-loss and muscle-building supplements with stroke, testicular cancer, liver damage, and even death.
Rihanna said she was never allowed to wear make-up not until she was 16yr old. She said she would watch her mother, Monica Braithwaite apply her make-up in the mirror.
She said: “My mum pretty much worked in the beauty and perfume industry for a long time – she did make-up for people and was a make-up artist – so I always loved that.
“I was not allowed to wear make-up for a very long time. But I would watch her in the mirror doing her makeup, obsessed.”
The ‘Work’ hitmaker recalled the first time she was allowed to create a full beauty look on her face for her school pageant.
She added: “She let me wear lipstick if I was a flower girl in a wedding or something like that, but the first time I really, really did my make-up – and she did it for me – was at my school pageant. [I was] 16, just before I left Barbados.”
And Rihanna remembers the first time she put on foundation “the most” because her skin looked “perfect”.
She told Interview magazine: “The foundation is the thing I remember the most, because I had never seen my skin look that perfect. And it was like, ‘Wow, I want to wear foundation every day.’
“My brother hated me for that. He was like, ‘What are you doing? You’ve got to wear that every day now?’ In my school, you weren’t allowed to do much at all. If your hoop wasn’t hugging your ear, you couldn’t wear it. It was studs or a hoop that hugged your ear.”

Common real estate contingencies have been explained in this expository article.
Real estate contingencies were the furthest thing from your teenage mind.
When you started dreaming about the home you would live in as a young adult your mind was focused on paint color, furniture, gardens, and such. Oh my!
You’ll have wide rooms here and a pristine swimming pool there.
High ceilings with big windows to welcome the fresh summer air.
It seems a win until you grow up and find out that taxes are high and the world won’t be as kind. Your dream home might need some re-thinking.
But now here you are, thinking about buying your dream home. Guess what? The world seems not so bad after all, especially if you can rely on a ‘contingency’ as you buy a real estate property. One thing for sure, working with a real estate agent that knows how to use contingencies to your benefit will serve you well.
Get to know these real estate contingencies so you can make the most out of them:
What are contingencies when buying a home?
A contingency is a condition that must be satisfied before a deal can close. With this, the buyer can have the right to recover the earnest money if the contingency isn’t met. Real estate contingencies come in various forms. They can be:
Inspection Contingencies
This type of contingency in the home buying process is all for your benefit. It allows you to have a full picture of the house’s condition. You can check the systems and other details of the property from inside out. Even checks for damages from molds and insects will fall under this contingency.
Once you receive the reports for the inspection, you can then negotiate with the seller on the repairs. If the seller is unrealistic about your satisfying your requests, you can freely walk away from the sale.
Financing Contingencies
For buyers planning to purchase their home using a mortgage, financing contingencies are a typically baked into the contract for your protection. It gives you ample time to apply and receive the loan you’ll use to buy the home. This contingency allows you to look for alternative sources if you’re unable to receive financing. You can also walk away from the sale with this contingency if necessary.
Appraisal Contingency
This contingency is another alas for the buyers. The appraisal contingency accompanies the finance contingency.
Note that appraisals determine the fair market value of real estate properties. Appraisal contingency protects you from buying homes with prices not in line with the fair market value.
Title Contingencies
Title contingency spares you from the possibility of contested property ownership. In real estate title is the record the of the home’s ownership. From past to present, this legal document shows all the owners. It also shows all the judgments made against the property as well as contractor and tax liens.
Your attorney or title company will review the title before closing the deal. Resolving issues follows so the title will be transferred to you with nothing questionable.
When you encounter unresolvable problems with the title before closing, you can leave the sale freely.
Home Sale Contingency
Many home buyers need this type of contingency. It’s used specifically by those buyers who are also trying to sell their homes. This contingency lets you use a specified amount of time to find a buyer for your property. If you can’t find one within that time, you can have your earnest money back and walk away from the deal. It can also be used when there is a buyer for your home and you are simply writing an offer on a home that is “contingent” on the closing of your current property.
You can use this contingency, but know that this isn’t so popular among sellers. As it appears to offer more advantage to the buyer than the seller could have. If you use this one, know that it might weaken your offer.
Those are the most common real estate contingencies in 2019. Be sure to consult with your real estate agent about what contingency to use. Also, you need to look out for possible contingency clause issues.
Pay attention to key terms so your deal won’t result into the following.
What happens with your earnest money?
As you read through the contract, make sure to find the lines that makes clear your rights as a buyer and your obligations to remove those contingencies at agreed dates in the contract.
Don’t count on the seller giving you back your earnest money if you fail to properly abide by the contingencies and the contract.
What happens after the contingency deadlines?
Contingency clauses have deadlines. They’re valid and typically last between two weeks to two months. The length of time depends on the type of property you’re going to purchase and the need for the contingency. If you’re running out of time before the contingency deadline, you need to ask the seller for an extension. If the seller refuses, then you better exercise the contingency as agreed or your earnest money may be at risk.
Try not to think of contingencies as your ticket to a cancellation. Instead, view them as tools that give you time to move forward to complete the process of eventually owning your dream home.
If, however, you are in a spot and are unable to move forward because of a contingent item then, by all means, punch your ticket. That’s what the contingency is there for. For example: if you lose your job (not quit your job) and now do not have adequate income to make a house payment then you can cancel the contract due to the finance contingency.
Contingencies are fantastic tools that help buyers and sellers make things happen that would otherwise not be possible. Make sure you are working with a powerful agent who understands how to use them.

WHO has raised alarm that over one million cases of sexually transmitted infections occur daily.
The World Health Organization has raised an alarm over the lack of progress on curbing sexually transmitted diseases, while one of its experts warned of complacency as dating apps are spurring sexual activity.
The UN health agency said in a fresh report on Thursday that every day globally there were more than one million new cases of treatable sexually transmitted diseases (STD) or infections (STI).
WHO found that there were more than 376 million new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis and syphilis registered around the world in 2016 — the latest year for which data is available.
That is basically the same number as WHO reported in its previous study, based on data from 2012.
A WHO expert on sexually transmitted infections, Teodora Wi, separately told journalists there were concerns that condom use may be declining as people have lost their fear of contracting HIV in step with the emergence of available and effective antiviral treatments.
People are “complacent about protection,” she said, adding that this was dangerous at a time when “sex is more accessible”.
Peter Salama, WHO’s executive director of Universal Health Coverage, said in a statement that “we’re seeing a concerning lack of progress in stopping the spread of sexually transmitted infections worldwide”.
He called it “a wake-up call” for authorities to ensure that everybody had access to services to prevent and treat STIs.
WHO’s report shows that in 2016, 127 million people between 15 and 49 were infected with chlamydia globally. 87 million contracted gonorrhoea, and 6.3 million contracted syphilis.
In addition, some 156 million were infected with trichomoniasis — a parasital disease commonly known as “trich”.
‘Hidden epidemic’
“On average, approximately one in 25 people globally have at least one of these STIs,” the UN health agency said.
But since they seldom display symptoms early, people never know they have been infected and need treatment. This allows the diseases to continue to spread.
“We consider this a hidden epidemic, a dangerous epidemic,” Melanie Taylor, another WHO expert on sexually transmitted diseases said.
If left untreated, STIs can lead to serious and chronic conditions. These include neurological and cardiovascular disease. Infertility, stillbirths and increased risk of contracting HIV are also effects.
STIs spread mainly through unprotected sexual contact, but some like chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis can also be transmitted during pregnancy and childbirth.
Given the hidden nature of the epidemic, WHO stressed the importantance for sexually active people to get screened for STIs. And especially recommended that pregnant women be systematically screened for syphilis, as well as HIV.
Correct condom use was one of the most effective methods for protecting against STI transmission.
WHO also stressed the importance of comprehensive sexual education and easy access to STI screening as well as treatment.
Shortages in the global supply of benzathine penicillin has recently made it more complicated to treat syphilis. Also increasing resistance to antibiotics used to treat gonorrhea “may lead eventually to it being impossible to treat”, WHO warned.
