No fewer than eight persons have been killed, houses burnt and several others injured following an attack on Jekunho village in Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State on Friday evening.
The attack was suspected to have been carried out by herdsmen.
This is even as Rafinkada, Kente, Tor-Iorshaer and Tor-Musa communities in Wukari Local Government Area of the state were also razed to the ground in attack and reprisal attack between Tiv and Jukun ethnic groups in the early hours of Friday.
Mr. Paul Douglas, a resident of Jekunho community, which was attacked on the outskirts of Jalingo, the state capital, told our correspondent that the armed herdsmen numbering over 100 attacked the village at about 5:00pm, killing eight persons.
He noted that several other villagers were injured and the entire village reduced to rubble.
Douglas further said there was tension in Kona and Janibanibu villages following threats by the herdsmen to also attack the villages.
“These people have been threatening to destroy our villages and kill our people.
“Now, they have succeeded. They came in this evening and opened fire, killing anyone in sight.
“They were more than a hundred people on motorcycles and they were carrying heavy guns.
“Now our people have fled their homes into other villages and they are threatening to even burn down Janibanibu this night.
“Despite our plea, there is no security presence in the villages under attack, which are a few meters away from Jalingo town.”
Police Public Relations Officer in Taraba, DSP David Misal, did not pick his calls or respond to text message sent to him as at the time of filing this report.
